Don't start truck and race the engine!

Cold (engine temp.: ~32F (freezing): Start truck at not more
than ~1500 RPM. Let idle for 1+ minutes with out the heater, then 3+ minutes,
drive gently for about 3+ miles. *

Cool (engine temp.: ~50F): Start truck at not more than ~1500
RPM. Let idle for 1-2 minutes, drive gently for about one mile.

Hot: (engine temp.: ~100F) Start truck at not more than 1000
RPM. Let idle for 15-30 seconds, drive gently for about 1/4 mile.

Shutting off the engine:

Buy an EGT ), and have it installed, just after the turbo,
in the down pipe (get it as close to the outlet as possible).

Idle down the engine.

Why? Because I said so! Just kidding ;=)

In town. Typically, 1/2 to 1 minute, or below 1000 degrees.
Best if below 900 degrees.

Highway (above 45 MPH). Typically, 1-3 minute or below 1000
degrees. Best if below 900 degrees.

Freeway (above 65 MPH). Typically 3-6 minute or below 1000
degrees. Best if below 900 degrees

This really sucks, when your on a road trip, and you get
off the Freeway, to get gas. So, when I see the road side sign for
gas, 1-3 miles ahead, I slow to 55 MPH or less. Yah, I think 55 is, sleepily,
too slow also, but...

The oil cokes or burns in side the turbo and coats the oil
passages with crud that eventually blocks oil flow (like hardening of the
arteries, in people).

Also, Help remove heat that is build up in the turbo area.
Helps reduce the possibility of cracking the exhaust housing (turbo) or
the manifold.

I
have a (turbo) water temperature meter (TWT). My gage is connected
to the turbo water outlet near the radiator . I use it to make decisions,
about the real turbo temperature, during my idle down time. Normal is about
195F (I have a 180F thermostat).

If EGT is hi, and turbo-water-temp (TWT) is hi, then the
turbo is really hot.

If EGT is dropping but TWT is hotter that 200F or getting
hotter, that it really hot.

If EGT is 900F and TWT is 190F; Probably ok, to turn off
engine.

My EGT
(Exhaust Gas Temperatures (I have a TEC,
OEM Equivalent
turbo, and 2.5 in exhaust system. I have normal A/F. Max. boost@ ~9
PSI. I suspect, that the totally stock OEM turbo setup, is close
to these temperatures, probably hotter, add 100F deg. but I don't know.
My EGT is mounted on the down pipe, and is about 3 inches from the turbine
fan (the turbo's outlet). In the factory application, you would have
to, have the the EGT mounted, about 8 inches, down from the fan. (there's
a cast iron 90 degree elbow that attaches, the turbo to the down
pipe).

Driving around town, (cruz) less than 40 MPH. EGT=1000-1200F
Degrees.

Highway driving, (cruz, closed loop) less than 60 MPH. EGT=1100-1200F.

Freeway driving, (cruz, closed loop) more than 60 MPH. EGT=1200-1300F.

Freeway mountain pass, (under load, open loop. at least 50
MPH. EGT=1225-1325F, (~1350F on a vary hot day).

WOT (Wide-Open-Throttle), heavy acceleration, for sustained
periods. EGT=1200-1325F.

1400-1500F Deg., is too hot; 1500-1600F or higher, things
start to melt ...

If EGT is typical, and water temp (TWT) is about 195F, all
is probably ok...
