Engine Oil (4.5qts, or w/ext. oil cooler and filter (after
market), 5qts.):
-
Change engine oil and filter, every ~2,000 miles; Or ~3,500
if synthetic oil, including the filter, or:
-
I use synthetic; I change my oil, fully, every other time,
and the filter, every time; So at first, it's at 3k miles, I just change
the filter, and replace the lost oil; Next time, at the second change,
at 2k miles, I do a full change.
-
When changing oil: Prime the oil before starting the engine
(dry starts are not good). Pull the spark coil wire at distributor
end, and let dangle near something grounded (an inch or less (don't let
it touch, and make sure no one touches it, too ;=) Crank engine in 3 second
spurts, till the oil pressure just begins to show. Make 3-4 tries of the
3 second spurts. Don't just crank the engine till you get oil pressure,
this is hard in the barrings.
-
Front, rear differentials, and transfer (1.7/2.5/1.7qts
(auto uses ATF, 0.8qts):
-
Change diff. gear lube, every 2 years or 25k miles. Use 75-90
GL-5 synthetic. I like Red Line or Mobile One. If ever you drive threw,
any deep mud or water, that is 1-2 feet deep, than change at end of rainy
season. *
-
Change and transfer box lube every 2-4 years, or 25-50k miles.
Use 75-90 GL-5 synthetic. I like Red Line or Mobile One. If ever you drive

-
Transmission (Man. (R151F) 3.2qts./ Auto (W56) 4.1qts.
(more if external oil cooler) :
-
Manual: Change gear lube every 2 years or 25k miles. Use
(75-90 GL-4) "Red Line MT-90."
synthetic. If ever you drive threw, any deep mud or water, that is
3-4 feet deep, than change at end of rainy season. *
-
Automatic: Change oil and filter every 2 years or 25k miles.
If truck didn't come with a trany cooler, have one installed on the HOT
side, before in inters the radiator's hot side. *
* If, Axle, transfer, or Transmission, likely submerged,
change as soon as possible...
-
Other:
-
Use synthetic lube (grease, gear oil, oil) wherever possible.
It not cheap, but it worth it, in the long run...
-
Change the brake fluid every brake job, do a full bleed
(it cost extra). Use Castrol DOT-4, or other DOT-4.
-
Don't use Silicone DOT-5!
-
Use the spiral spark plug wire type. The NGK blue OEM type,
are ok for stock engines. I like
Mangnecor.
-
Don't use the carbon wires.
-
Use AutoLite duel platinum spark plugs (APP64). If engine
is modified, use one heat range cooler (APP63).
-
Swap out the factory spark coil, for a Jacob's variable magnetic
coil.
-
Use K& N air filter.
-
CarSound CAT, Flowmaster,
and (and change to a) 2.5 inch exhaust systems, from the Turbo
back...
-
Check the nuts and bolts on the exhaust system every,
6 months, as they loosen up from the heat cycling.
